Bridal Tips Series – Wedding Day Tips for the Bride

The day is here and you are ready to get married!  Or are you?  As a wedding photographer, I’ve been around many brides on their special day, and I’ve picked up on a few tips that will help them get through the day with big smiles and less anxiety.  With all the excitement and stress that goes with planning a wedding, sometimes it’s hard to remember to take care of yourself!  Hope these tips will help all you brides out there!

  • Drink water.  The most important thing to do throughout the day is to stay hydrated!  Especially in Hawaii, where it can be hot all year round, you want to make sure you have some water to sip every now and then.  Make it fancy and have some sparkling water or infused with fruit!
  • Delegate tasks to your Maid of honor and bridesmaids.  I know it goes without saying that the Maid of Honor and the bridesmaids are there to help with whatever you need.  But make sure to follow through and don’t forget to ask!  Sometimes in the excitement of the day, everyone is so busy that they forget what they are supposed to do.  Remind them- even if it’s something small or mundane like looking for your phone charger.  🙂
  • Have an emergency bag –  with tissues, bobbi pins, safety pins, eye drops, aspirin, lip balm, etc.  Make sure you keep your bag near you throughout the day!
  • Bring comfortable, flat shoes for the reception.  Everyone loves to dance at a wedding- make it easier on your feet and switch to comfortable shoes.  Nobody will notice!  Or have a bunch of matching flats or slippers for you and your bridesmaids to match and get down on the dance floor!
  • Take breaks and meditate- this is really important!  Throughout the day, everyone will be trying to get your attention and it can be overwhelming!  The guests will all want to take photos with you, the wedding planner will probably need you throughout the day, and the photographer will be there to capture your day.  Make sure to take 5 minutes here and there to breathe, take a moment, and just relax.
  • Have a checklist.  There are many lists a bride will need throughout the day- guest lists, photo checklist, song play list.  Make sure you plan ahead and have them ready with copies to the people that need them!
  • Make sure to eat something throughout the day.  Some brides get so nervous on their big day that they forget to eat!  Make sure to nourish your body so that you don’t feel faint or lightheaded. Have some crackers, veggies and hummus or a charcuterie tray while you are getting ready, and make sure you eat during the reception!
  • Stay away from foods that will upset your stomach.  You don’t want to have your stomach churning while saying your vows or have to rush to the bathroom at a bad time.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff.  With all this being said, if anything goes wrong on your wedding day- don’t worry!  Everything always works out in the end.
  • Have fun and enjoy the moment!
