My day with Passion Roots : DIY Headpiece

Here’s some behind the scenes photos I was talking about from my LAST POST.

I got to spend the day with some wonderful ladies. Shilhi from Passion Roots had a project to put together with Lei Chic so we made a day out of it.  Out with some help from Alisa and my belly, we had fun exploring Waimanalo and learning how to ‘forage’ and design a floral headpiece.

Here’s some fun behind the scenes for you…

We hopped into a golf cart and went down the road to find some short stem flowers.  Let me say, Shilhi got the eye for them.

Then we went further down the highway so we had to take another car.  There were some flowers on the side of the road that Shilhi saw.  None of us were tall enough so she tried to carry someone.  It was pretty hilarious.

After we got all the floral goodies, we stopped for some plantation ice tea.  It was YUMMY!!!

Time to watch Shilhi work her magic…

When we got back from shooting her little head piece on her model, we came back to another flower bouquet that she made.  She was quick!  It’s so beautiful!  Then with her leftover she made a bird below.  Isn’t she amazing?!

Thank you Passion Roots for having us along on the golf cart ride!!

How to make a headpiece

  1. Tape a stemmed flower to a 2-inch strip of wire. Leave 1 inch of the wire untaped. This is your first flower piece.
  2. Tape this flower piece to a long piece of wire, the base. Pull the tape tight as you wind it around.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with more flower pieces, letting the blooms cascade.
  4. Fill in any open spaces with blossoms by attaching them to the base with smaller wires.
  5. After you get your desired length, wrap the end of the headpiece with floral tape and add floral glue to the end.
  6. Finish it off with a final bloom or cluster of blooms with short stems at the end of the piece. (It will hide the edges, like our purple flower did.)
  7. Bend, shape as you desire, fasten with hairpins and assume your royal bearing.
